Tip #1: BE SURE TO USE YOUR SPELLING AND GRAMMAR CHECK!
Tip #2: Edit the job objective to fit the position that you are applying for. Often enough people submit their resume for the “Permanent Administrative” position with their objective stating things like “Seeking a position as a Substitute Teacher”. This can be looked at negatively if you are actually applying for an Administrative position.
Tip #3: Do not include a photo of yourself unless it pertains to the job industry, for instance modeling, or film and television. This is not necessary and may even be cause for discrimination.
Tip #4: Listing your reasons for leaving a position on your resume is optional.
Tip #5: Avoid using fancy or narrow fonts that can be hard to read.
Tip #6: Edit the layout of the resume to show your strongest areas. If for instance you do not have a lot of work experience, but you have recently completed your degree head your resume with your Skills, then Education and Awards and then follow with any job history. If you feel that your years of experience at a particularly prestigious company are more your strong point head your resume with your Experiences and Skills instead.
Tip #7: Bold Headings to make them stand out and make them easier to find. (e.i. NAME, EXPERIENCE, TITLES, etc.)
Tip #8: Be sure that your contact information is current and spelled correctly and the numbers are valid.
Tip #9: Be sure that your reference contacts know that you have listed them as a reference to avoid an embarrassing confrontation on behalf of your contact and your prospective new employer, as well as yourself!
Tip #10: Submit your resume clean and unwrinkled! This is your first impression in some cases.
